In an effort to incentivize new business, the Downtown Iowa City District is offering grants to entrepreneurs who sign new soft-goods retail leases there.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that first-floor vacancy levels are at about four percent, but the City is hoping to maintain a balance in types of businesses downtown. In a news release from the District, Executive Director Nancy Bird said most interest is coming from national and local restaurant and food establishments.
Those that sign leases are eligible for $15,000 grants to get their business started up.
The District is also offering a year of complimentary retail delivery and the businesses can sell their products on the district’s online store, www.downtowniowacitymarket.com.
