A University of Iowa football player from the Peoria area was arrested early Saturday after an alleged altercation at an Iowa City bar.
Police say the incident occurred around 12:30am at Elray’s Live and Dive on Iowa Avenue. 19-year-old Josiah Miamen of Dunlap Illinois was reportedly obstructing the doorway, causing staff to ask him to leave. He allegedly refused to do so, and when staff tried to remove him, he pushed and attempted to punch a door attendant.
An officer was called to the scene, and Miamen was spotted at the intersection of Dubuque and Washington streets. He was told to stop, but allegedly fled on foot. He was arrested after a brief chase.
Upon contact, Miamen was allegedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, impaired balance, had the odor of ingested alcohol, and was wearing a bar wristband. He reportedly admitted to drinking but not being intoxicated. He allegedly claimed he would pass a breath test, but refused to provide one.
A search of his person turned up a fictitious Minnesota driver’s license with his name and likeness, but a different date of birth altered to make Miamen appear old enough to legally drink.
He was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Trespass, Interference with Official Acts, Public Intoxication and Possession of a Fictitious ID. Should he be convicted on all counts, Miamen could face a jail term of up to fifteen months.
The University of Iowa Football website lists Miamen as a sophomore tight end. He missed most of the 2020 season due to injury.
