A Solon man was taken into custody after an Iowa City police officer allegedly observed him damaging a downtown parking ramp gate.
Police say the incident occurred Thursday just before 2 am at the ramp on South Linn Street. 23-year-old Zachery Nunemaker of Marshek Court run his body into the entry gate, breaking it. The officer stopped Nunemaker to arrest him, but he fled. He continued to flee despite repeated commands for him to stop.
Nunemaker reportedly ran himself into an area that he could not escape without coming into the path of the officer. He came running back towards the officer, who ordered him to stop. Nunemaker and the officer collided, falling to the ground. He continued to flee and fell again. The officer reached Nunemaker and was pushed away as he attempted to handcuff him. After a brief scuffle, the officer was able to direct Nunemaker to the ground and arrest him. He allegedly had indications of impairment, and a post arrest PBT showed a blood-alcohol content of .092 percent.
The officer reported that he suffered back pain as a result of the incident.
Nunemaker was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations causing Bodily Injury, Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, Public Intoxication and Damage to Parking Devices. If convicted on all counts, Nunemaker could be sentenced to over three years in prison.
