An Iowa City man faces decades in prison after breaking into the residence of a woman he has a no contact order with, assaulting her, and taking her car and their shared child.

Police say 27-year old Zachary Washpun of Kountry Lane has a no-contact order with the woman prohibiting him from in or near her Highway 1 West residence. Tuesday at approximately 3:50 am, he’s accused of going to the residence. When the woman opened the door, Washpun allegedly forced his way in and demanded to know where his child was.

He allegedly destroyed the woman’s apartment and hit her in the face with a glass bottle. She attempted to call for help, but Washpun reportedly took her cellphone, her vehicle, and their child and fled the scene. The woman told police she had pain from the assault. They also determined that the assault and tirade created a substantial risk to the child’s safety and mental health.

Officers located Washpun at his residence with the allegedly stolen vehicle. A check of his driving record showed his status as revoked for OWI test failure through this April 4th.

Washpun was taken into custody later that morning and faces a host of charges. They include 1st degree Burglary, Child Stealing, Child Endangerment, Domestic Abuse Assault with intent , 2nd degree Theft, Obstruction of Emergency Communications, Driving while Revoked, and violation of the no-contact order.

Washpun also faces charges of OWI 1st offense from September and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding airflow from last April. He was wanted for failure to appear for his case management conference Monday. That has been reset for March 22nd.

If convicted on all counts, Washpun could be sentenced to over 48 years in prison. He remains in the Johnson County Jail on a total of $51,000 bond. An arraignment on the charges stemming from Tuesday’s reported incident has yet to be set.

Another no-contact order was requested between the two parties involved.
