An Iowa City man faces several years in prison after a traffic stop yielded marijuana and heroin.
Police stopped a Toyota with an expired registration and for running a red light Tuesday just before 12:30am near 1st Avenue and Court Street. While standing at the passenger side window, a bud of marijuana, a syringe, and a spoon with a melted substance was reportedly seen under the center console. A probable cause search allegedly turned up the marijuana along with four bundles of heroin and the spoon. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Bryston Peden of Rochester Avenue, was searched and police found another bundle of heroin on his person. Peden reportedly admitted to ownership of the items discovered.
He was placed under arrest and faces charges of keeping a vehicle for the use of controlled substances, a Class C substance violation for heroin, a Class D controlled substance violation for marijuana possession 3rd or subsequent, failure to affix a drug stamp, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, Peden could be sentenced to over 22 years in prison.
