The Iowa City Community School District has announced they’re pausing 3rd through 5th grade Social Studies instruction while they review the material for cultural inclusiveness.
A statement from the District indicates that over the next few weeks they will be identifying materials that are inclusive for all students. In the meantime, teachers will be focusing on Science and Health so that they can focus on Social Studies towards the end of the school year.
The District also indicated that they’re doing a comprehensive review of social studies curricullumand will be implanting new materials for grades K-6 for the 2021-22 school year.
KCRG TV reached out to the ICCSD to comment on what part of the curriculum is being reviewed at each grade level and what they plan on replacing the current materials with. They added no further comments will be made until the review process is complete.
