An Iowa City man reportedly made his 2nd OWI stop worse by scuffling with police last week.

39-year-old Lance Hanson of Highland Avenue was stopped near Highland’s intersection with Broadway Street around 12:20 am Friday after allegedly observed going 40 in a 25 mile-per-hour zone. The arrest report indicates that Hanson continued on for about 5-6 blocks before he eventually stopped for police lights.

Upon contact, Hanson was reportedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes and the odor of ingested alcohol. He showed multiple signs of intoxication on preliminary tests, and was charged with OWI, his second offense.

When officers tried to put Hanson in handcuffs, he allegedly resisted, and it took several officers to subdue him. He’s also accused of making multiple attempts to grab an officer’s gun and told them to shoot him.

Hanson faces Interference with Official Acts and Disarming a Police Officer as well as OWI second offense. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over seven years in prison.
