An Iowa City man facing a felony charge after allegedly trying to purchase a firearm following a domestic abuse arrest faces new charges after a police chase south of Iowa City Saturday night.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a car with a broken headlight just after 6:45 Saturday night near the corner of Sand Road and Napoleon Street. The driver, identified as 36-year-old Corbin Ranslem of Langenberg Avenue, allegedly took off as the officer approached the vehicle on foot, leading to a brief police chase. Deputies say Ranslem eventually ditched the car and tried to flee on foot, but was eventually located by pursuing officers.
During the chase, Ranslem allegedly threw out a bag containing THC wax and prescription pills, including lorazepam and hydromorphone.
Ranslem is charged with Eluding While Possessing Drugs, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drugs. He was charged with a second count of Possession of a Controlled Substance relating to a May 9th, 2020 incident in which he allegedly overdosed at an address on Dolphin Drive. An Advil bottle containing methamphetamine was found on his person.
Ranslem is also accused of violating terms of his pre-trial release on a pending charge of Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuse Offender. Police say last August he tried to purchase a Sig Sauer P220R handgun from a private citizen despite a protective order that says he is not allowed to possess a firearm while the order is in effect. Ranslem was convicted of Domestic Abuse Assault on May 11th of last year after he attacked his estranged wife in March. Online records show he has violated the protective order multiple times.
Ranslem allegedly violated terms of his pre-trial release by travelling to Illinois without permission last October. Authorities were able to track him to Illinois via GPS.
If convicted on the latest charges, Ranslem faces a maximum of eight years in prison.
