Two dogs were killed in a house fire near the Coralville Reservoir.

According to the North Liberty Fire Department, crews were dispatched to 1760 Hedgewood Circle at 6:14 Wednesday night.  North Liberty Police officers were the first to arrive and witnessed smoke from multiple sides of the building. All the occupants, with the exception of the pets, had self-evacuated and were accounted for.

As North Liberty fire units arrived, hose lines were deployed to knock down the fire, which was contained to the kitchen. Crews then conducted a search of the building and extinguished remaining hot spots. Multiple crews were needed to suppress the fire, ventilate the building and perform overhaul operations.

Firefighters from Coralville and Solon assisted in the effort. Crews were on scene for just over three hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Two dogs perished due to smoke inhalation. The Red Cross was requested and is assisting occupants with immediate needs. A loss estimate is unavailable.
