A Coralville man was taken into custody Sunday after a Valentines Day visit to a local hotel ended with him allegedly assaulting his fiancé.

Police were called about a domestic disturbance at the Radisson on the Iowa River Landing Sunday at about 6:30pm. 41-year-old Clifton Russell of First Avenue and the woman have been in a relationship for two years and are engaged. Upon arrival, the woman informed officers that Russell open-hand slapped her on the left side of her face. He’s then accused of grabbing her by the hand and started choking her. She said that Russell held her down on the bed for two minutes while he was choking her.

Russell was arrested for his second offense Domestic Assault, and Domestic Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on the charges, he could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
