A North Liberty man who sent threatening letters about the Regina High School football program has been found in possession of multiple firearms.

North Liberty Police were called to an address on Mary Lane just before 8:45 Thursday morning to assist probation officers for a firearms offense. The resident, 51-year-old Daniel Stone, is prohibited from possessing guns due to a conviction on federal charges after he was caught submitting forged tax forms while applying for a bank loan in 2012.

Arriving officers say they found three handguns and a rifle inside the residence. Various amounts of ammunition and magazines were also seized, and it was determined that Stone was present when one of the firearms was purchased.

Stone was arrested in 2014 while living in Solon after he sent three letters to the Regina Catholic Education Center in August of 2013 claiming to represent a group called “Regina Parents for Responsible Athletics”. He accused Regina coaches of distributing performance enhancing drugs to athletes, and wrote that if certain demands were not met he would leak the accusations to the media. The letter writer encouraged other schools to protest playing Regina and demanded Regal players submit to drug testing before games.

DNA evidence determined Stone to be the author of the letters. He was given credit for time served on a 3rd Degree Harassment charge.

Stone now faces a charge of Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
