A Coralville man who was given a ten year suspended sentence and three years probation on a 2nd Degree Burglary charge has been arrested after an alleged domestic assault.
A Department of Correctional Services report indicates that 36-year-old Julius Riley was sentenced in January of 2019 for the burglary and agreed to the terms of his probation.
On January 20th, Riley’s wife contacted the probation officer and accused Riley of drinking alcohol and being verbally abusive. Riley denied the allegation but tested positive for alcohol abuse.
Then on Tuesday around 12:45pm, the wife called the probation officer and requested that Riley be required to leave their residence. The couple have newborn twins in the household, and Riley was accused of being unruly and abusive towards his wife and family. He allegedly continued to drink despite being on an alcohol monitor.
The officer spoke to Riley over the phone and suggested that he take a time out and leave the residence, but he apparently refused. When probation officers arrived, Coralville police were already at the residence, arresting Riley for Domestic Assault Causing Injury 3rd or subsequent offense. Riley’s wife reportedly had red marks and abrasions about the neck and face consistent with that of a physical assault.
The probation officer reports that prior to the incident on the 9th, Riley’s wife had left a voice mail that lasted several minutes, in which Riley could reportedly be heard screaming, yelling, and making cruel comments to his wife. Children were heard crying in the background.
Riley was taken into custody and faces up to five years in prison for the assault charge, and as he broke his probation, could be sentenced to serve up to ten additional years for the burglary conviction. Bond was set at $15,000 for the two charges, and he remains at the jail as of Friday morning. A no-contact order was granted on Wednesday by Judge Jason Burns.
