Two Cedar Rapids men are in custody after being accused of driving down to Iowa City Tuesday night to confront someone over a previous home invasion.
Police say 31-year-old Shannon Williams of Oakland Road Northeast and 22-year-old Devon Hanson of Rockford Road Southwest went to a home in the 900 block of South Van Buren Street just before 10:30pm with the intent of confronting the person who allegedly committed a home invasion in Cedar Rapids. Hanson stayed in the car, and Williams, allegedly carrying a gun, went to the house for “justice,” in his words
The residents called police, and the two fled the scene. An officer located the suspect vehicle near Kirkwood Avenue and Gilbert Court, leaving a funeral home. The 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis was easily identified, as it had a Domino’s Pizza topper on the roof. Williams matched the description provided by the resident who called police, and police attempted to detain him. The two instead took off, and crashed their vehicle a short distance away. Williams and Hanson fled on foot, ignoring officer commands to stop. Williams reportedly threw a fanny pack which was later recovered. The two were caught after a short chase.
A search of the fanny pack turned up marijuana packed in individual baggies, and about a dozen pills of various colors, which Williams reportedly identified as MDMA. A probable cause search of the crashed vehicle found a larger bag of marijuana and a loaded Luger P94 firearm. A witness positively identified Williams as the suspect.
Williams also admitted to using marijuana and MDMA prior to the incident. He reportedly exhibited measurable impairment on field testing, and no alcohol was found in his system using a PBT. A sample of his urine was taken for toxicology testing.
Under Miranda, Williams allegedly said that he had taken the marijuana to Iowa City, anticipating a confrontation with the resident, claiming that the weed and the MDMA was going to be given to the person as a “peace offering.”
Williams faces a host of charges. They include Driving while Suspended, Possession of Weapons while Intoxicated, Eluding, OWI first offense, Possession or control of a Vehicle with intent to store Drugs, Carrying Weapons, Interference with Officials Acts involving a Dangerous Weapon, Going Armed With Intent, a Tax Stamp Violation, and Class C and D Controlled Substance violations. If convicted on all counts, Williams could be sentenced to up to 37 years in prison.
Hanson was charged with Interference with Official Acts and Going Armed with Intent, and could face a prison sentence of over five years if convicted.
