An Iowa City restaurant owner will not serve any jail time after pleading guilty to a criminal mischief charge stemming from an incident involving a neighboring business.

46-year-old Brian Joens, owner of Joensey’s on North Dodge Street, was charged after an October 12th incident at the University of Iowa Quickcare clinic near his restaurant.

According to police, a roofer at Quickcare called dispatchers that afternoon and said that a man was mad at him and took his ladder. Various witnesses allegedly saw Joens take the ladder from the side of the building and bring it into his restaurant, then throw the ladder out the back. Joens told officers he didn’t take the ladder, but was able to point the roofer to its location. Joens allegedly caused about $30 in damage to the ladder.

Online records show Joens pleaded guilty to 5th Degree Criminal Mischief on Thursday and was fined $105.

If convicted after a jury trial, Joens could have been sentenced to up to 30 days in jail.
