City officials from Iowa City and Cedar Rapids issued statements Saturday indicating both cities plan to continue their current coronavirus mask orders, despite a recent mandate from Governor Kim Reynolds.

On Friday, Reynolds issued an order that removed a mask requirement for those spending 15 minutes or more in an indoor area within 6 feet of people not in their household. She also ended mask requirements for those in state buildings and some businesses, such as barber shops. The governor’s new order also ends limits on the number of customers in a business or a requirement that they stay socially distant.

On Saturday afternoon, the city of Iowa City issued the following statement: “Iowa City’s mask order is not impacted by the Governor’s latest order and is still in place through May 31, 2021. Residents should continue to wear masks in all public spaces within Iowa City in accordance with the City’s order.”

Cedar Rapids mayor Brad Hart issued a similar statement Saturday night indicating the city will continue to enforce its current mask order despite the governor’s edict.
