Johnson County begins the distribution of coronavirus vaccines to those who qualify under the state’s Phase 1B plan today.

The County Health Department announced that residents 65 and older will receive their vaccine from their University of Iowa Health Care or Mercy Iowa City provider. According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, those providers will call or email qualified patients to schedule the vaccine appointment. Patients are being asked not to contact their providers regarding the vaccine.

University of Iowa Health Care officials announced last week that existing patients can express interest in getting a vaccine using the online MyChart or by registering through a web portal.

Both UIHC and Mercy Iowa City caution that there is a very limited number of vaccines available now, and to be patient as increased doses are rolled out over the coming months.

Others in the Phase 1B group include people with disabilities living at home, essential workers who are most at risk of contagion, first responders, and workers at pre K, early education, and child care facilities.
