Liz Tovar, who has served as University of Iowa interim vice president for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion since this past August, has been named Executive Officer of the department.

Tovar was UI associate athletics director for student-athlete academic services when she was appointed as the interim by university interim Vice President and Provost Kevin Kregel. She also serves on the UI Athletics senior management team, numerous campus committees, and oversees diversity educational efforts for student-athletes.

In an interview with the Daily Iowan last month, university president Bruce Harreld praised Tovar for the great job she’d done in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Associate Vice President candidates in that department withdrew after Harreld announced his early retirement in October, and he said that Tovar was thinking as a long term rather than as an interim leader.

In a statement this week, Tovar said she was honored to be “a part of such important work and important change on campus.”

Her new appointment begins Monday, and must be approved by the Board of Regents.
