A Coralville man who has already been convicted of domestic assault twice within the last 12 months and had a warrant from a September incident has been arrested.
Police say that 33-year-old Brandon Mitchell, whose ID lists an address in Florence, Alabama, was involved in a physical altercation with his live-in girlfriend at their 20th Avenue apartment about 2:45am Monday. He’s accused of grabbing the woman’s neck and holding it for about 20 seconds. The woman told officers that it felt like a rug burn and it was hard for her to swallow.
Officers observed the woman had a small red mark on the right side of her neck.
Court records indicate that Mitchell has been convicted of Domestic Abuse in April and June of 2020, had a no-contact order in place since June 14th, and had an outstanding warrant on another assault charge from September 25th. In that incident, Mitchell allegedly pushed a woman from behind at his apartment, causing her to fall into a TV stand and a closet. When she got up, Mitchell allegedly pushed her back into the closet, got on top of her and strangled her. The woman told officers at the time that she was barely able to breathe during the incident. She reportedly had discoloration near the middle of her neck.
Mitchell was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 5am Monday, and he faces two counts of Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow and Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent. If convicted, Mitchell faces up to 15 years in prison. A request for another no-contact order was made by the victim.
