Iowa City man arrested after alleged fight with police

An Iowa City man was taken into custody Thursday after being accused of trying to fight the staff at a downtown bar and refusing to leave, then scuffling with police.

According to arrest reports, 25-year-old John Zamora was at Pints on South Clinton Street around 12:20 am. He allegedly tried to fight with bar staff, and refused to leave, so police were called. Zamora was observed with bloodshot watery eyes, slurred confused speech, impaired balance, and the odor of ingested alcohol.

Zamora reportedly refused to let officers try find him a ride home, and walked away despite being told to stop. He then pulled away from police. They got Zamora into a squad car, but not before he allegedly kicked the car and then an officer. He’s accused of kicking another officer while they were searching him.

Marijuana was allegedly found in Zamora’s pocket.

He’s been charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Public Intoxication, and Marijuana Possession. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to 14 months in prison.
