A Coralville man faces charges that he attacked an Iowa City Police officer after getting kicked out of a bar.
Officers were called to The Vine on East Prentiss Street just before 6:30 Tuesday night for two subjects refusing to leave. Investigators asked one of the men, 51-year-old Francisco Sanchez-Valdez of the Western Hill Estates manufactured housing community, to identify himself. He refused and began to walk away.
Officers attempted to stop Sanchez-Valdez, but he allegedly tensed up, resisted, and attempted to pull away. Police say he was given several orders to stop resisting, but instead he kicked them and kept fighting back.
Sanchez-Valdez later told the arresting officer he resisted because he was upset at the staff at The Vine for kicking him out. He’s charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, a Serious Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year in jail.
