An Urbana Illinois man was taken into custody Thursday after being accused of stealing a laptop from an Iowa City apartment he was visiting.

Officers responded to a fight in progress on the 600 block of South Capitol Street. The reporting party was one of the tenants of the apartment, who advised that her roommate was in a fight with several friends in the residence. While police were escorting 21-year-old Kavon Johnson off the property, the reporting party noticed that her laptop was missing from her bedroom. Officers allegedly saw Johnson walking out the door with what appeared to be an object in the shape of a laptop wrapped in a coat.

A subsequent search turned up the stolen laptop, along with two Iphones and a pair of headphones. The victim said the laptop was in her bedroom and didn’t give Johnson permission to enter the room. The other objects recovered were in the common area of the apartment at the time of the theft.

Johnson has been charged with 3rd degree burglary and 3rd degree theft, and could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison if convicted on both counts.
