A Coralville man accused of being part of an Iowa City trailer vandalism last month has been arrested and charged with burglary.

Police say the incident occurred at the Bon Aire Mobile Home Lodge on Highway 6 East. On November 1st just before 4:30pm, 33-year-old Gustavo Canales of Waterford Drive allegedly attempted to enter a trailer through the front door; finding it locked, he was able to get in through the back. Witnesses observed Canales then opening the front door to let in 24 year-old Christian Garcia of Dickenson Lane. After a few minutes, the two were observed carrying a vanity mirror out of the residence.

Canales then stayed outside; Garcia, who reportedly had been previously evicted from the residence, then went inside, causing a reported $10,000 in damage to the drywall, appliances and cabinets.

A warrant for Canales’ arrest was requested. He was picked up Sunday afternoon and charged with 3rd degree Burglary, a Class D Felony. He was released that evening.

Garcia was stopped by police after the incident. Property management showed other officers proof of his eviction. When confronted about the damage, Garcia would only admit to being at the trailer, saying he was locked out and didn’t enter. He was arrested the day of the incident and charged with 1st degree Criminal mischief and 3rd degree Burglary and could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
