16 University of Iowa students reported testing positive for the coronavirus over the weekend, as did six UI staffers. That’s three more students than during the same period last week, and the same number of staff members. The latest figures bring the total number of UI students reporting positive tests at 2,682 since the fall semester began and the total number of infected UI staff members to 283.
One residence hall occupant is currently under quarantine and two are in self-isolation. Quarantine is used to keep someone who might have been exposed to COVID-19 away from others, while self-isolation is used to separate people infected with the virus from those who are not infected.
Though classes have moved online following Thanksgiving recess, campus buildings will remain open and accessible for the rest of the semester. Hours may vary, so UI officials say to consult individual building and unit websites before visiting.
An estimated 2,000 UI students have decided to stay in the dorms through at least the end of the semester.
