A Fort Madison accused of burglarizing an Iowa City business and pawning it later that day in 2018 has been arrested for the alleged crime nearly two years later.

According to police, the initial incident occurred on Christmas Eve 2018. The business reported a burglary with multiple power tools stolen. Surveillance video showed the theft occurred at 6am that day.

Just before 1pm, the alleged culprit, identified as 38-year-old Julian Menke, went to the Money And More store on South Riverside Drive and pawned an item that had a make, model, serial number and description matching one that was part of the burglary earlier. Additional witness information was also used to show that Menke had possession of the tool, valued at $1650.

A warrant was issued for Menke’s arrest in December 2019; he was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with 2nd Degree Theft, a Class D Felony. He was released on his own recognizance with future court dates to be determined.
