Iowa City Hospice and the Visiting Nurse Association of Johnson County have announced a merger.

The boards of directors of both nonprofit organizations announced the move Tuesday. The groups said in a news release the merger would better serve the health care needs of the community.

Members of the Iowa City Hospice and VNA boards of directors say they will work together to govern the new organization. After 23 years of service with VNA, Executive Director Sue Novotny is retiring, and Iowa City Hospice Executive Director Karla Kamal will assume the leadership role.

The VNA primarily serves Johnson County, while Iowa City Hospice’s service area includes Johnson, Cedar, Iowa, Linn, Louisa, Muscatine and Washington counties.
