Two Quad Cities residents have been arrested after a Saturday morning police chase from Coralville to Tiffin.

According to arrest records, an Iowa State Patrol trooper was driving westbound on Interstate 80 near the 1st Avenue exit around 8am when a rapidly-approaching vehicle came up behind him. The 2009 Chevy Malibu was clocked doing 96 miles per hour in a 70 mile-per-hour zone. The car then slowed down and refused to pass the trooper.

At one point the trooper pulled over onto the shoulder, and the car came to a complete stop on the traveled portion of the Interstate. The vehicle finally got in front of the trooper and continued driving slowly, at which time the officer activated his lights and siren.

The Malibu then took off at a high rate of speed, reaching up to 114 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour construction zone. It finally pulled over near the corner of Oakdale Boulevard and Park Road in Tiffin.

The driver, 32-year-old William Fues of Davenport, was seen getting out of the passenger-side door. He and his passenger, 32-year-old Andi Staggs, also of Davenport, were placed under arrest. Investigators say a broken meth pipe was found inside the vehicle, although both Fues and Staggs denied it was theirs.

The front passenger seat was adjusted to Fues’ height, and his cellphone was found on the driver’s side floorboard near the brake. Fues is suspended from driving indefinitely. The car was not registered, and no insurance was provided.

Staggs allegedly told a North Liberty officer that she had a baggie of methamphetamine inside a body cavity. It was removed by a female conservation officer who was called to the scene. More methamphetamine was found on her person during a search at the Johnson County Jail

Fues is charged with Eluding, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving While Suspended, Operating Without Registration, Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability, and numerous traffic violations. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over two years in prison.

Staggs is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Facility. She faces a maximum of over six years in prison, if convicted.
