Senator Joni Ernst is under fire after her campaign sent out a fundraising blast using the death of Ruth Bader Ginsberg as a campaign issue less than an hour after the Supreme Court Justice’s death was announced.

The email read “Emergency 5X matching has been activated for ALL donations made to protect the White House, keep the Senate majority in Republican hands and ensure the next Supreme Court nominee is selected by President Trump!”

The email was sent out at 7:08pm Friday. News of Ginsberg’s death came just after 6:15pm.

After the email received intense criticism on social media, Ernst released the following statement: “This email never should have gone out. Though I never saw it, it was sent out under my name and I take responsibility for it. Tonight, my prayers are with the family of Justice Ginsburg.” She later issued a statement praising Ginsberg, calling her “a force to be reckoned with” and “an iconic figure who blazed a trail for working moms, graciously balancing her professional life and family.”
