A medical marijuana dispensary could be coming to Iowa City.

The Press-Citizen reports that the Iowa Department of Public Health made the announcement Thursday. They offered dispensary licenses to Iowa Cannibis Company East in Iowa City and Cannabis Patient Network in Council Bluffs. Initial reports said that the dispensary would be located in Coralville, but officials confirmed it would be in Iowa City.

A state administrator indicated that the dispensary would be located in the old Paul’s Discount building on Highway 1 West, which has been redeveloped over the last few years. Current tenants include Harbor Freight Tools, Zio Johnos, Clean Laundry, and other businesses.

The state of Iowa has relaxed their strict limits on what kind of marijuana can be sold and who can buy it. Marijuana advocates say the current limit of THC, changed from 3% to a cap of 4.5 grams per patient every 90 days, is still too low to meet patient’s needs.

MedPharm, out of Des Moines, is the only licensed manufacturer of marijuana medications in the state, after a Cedar Rapids manufacturer shut its doors earlier this year.

There’s no indication when the dispensary will open.
