An Iowa City woman is facing domestic abuse charges after a Wednesday night incident.
According to police, an officer responded to the 2500 block of Whispering Meadow Drive on reports of a sick person. Upon arrival, he encountered 36-year-old Joni Reed on the porch, yelling at a man who was inside the residence. The man, who has been living with Reed intimately for over a year, was not near her when she was yelling at him.
Reed then reportedly grabbed a metal yard stake and pointed the sharp end at the man, who was standing behind the door. She then allegedly stated, “I will stab you in the heart.”
Reed had to be given several orders to drop the stake before doing so, and allegedly stated multiple times, “I should have stayed with my own kind.” The officer said that Reed smelled strongly of ingested alcohol.
Reed was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault with Display or Use of a Weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years if convicted.
A no-contact order was requested between the two parties.
