Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague is extending the city’s mandatory mask mandate, as well as increasing the fine for non-compliance.
On Monday, Teague extended the city’s face covering order until November 13th. The order, which was put in place on July 21st and was originally set to expire on September 15th, requires every person in the city of Iowa City to wear a face-covering when in public. The covering must cover the nose and mouth to protect others from exposure to COVID-19.
Per the order, face coverings must be worn when in public places such as grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, retail stores, while riding public transportation or using a private car service, and when outdoors and six-feet of social distancing cannot be maintained.
The extension also changes the minimum fine for violating the order. The first offense is a simple misdemeanor punishable by a $105 fine. Second and subsequent offenses are simple misdemeanors and punishable by $855 fines.
Businesses must require all customers to have a face-covering and must post signs alerting customers to the requirement.
