Coralville man arrested for drugs after traffic stop

A Coralville man was taken into custody on drug charges after the vehicle he was riding in was stopped for speeding.

According to the arrest report, Iowa City police stopped a 2005 Nissan at the intersection of East Burlington and South Dodge streets Monday just before 6:15pm for going 39 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. 30-year-old Rontavious Farmer of 9th Street was in the front passenger seat, and a K9 alerted to drugs in the vehicle.

Farmer was holding a black bag, and officers located multiple vape devices, straws used for narcotic inhalation, and a small baggie containing hexagon-shaped pills. Under Miranda, Farmer allegedly said that the pills were suboxone, a Schedule III controlled substance. He added that he didn’t have a prescription for the pills, and that the bag and pills were a friend’s that he has had possession of for multiple days. Farmer also said that some of his possessions were in the bag.

The pills were sent to DCI for testing.

Farmer was charged with second offense Possession of a controlled substance, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years if convicted.
