Coralville police have shot a man they say aimed a rifle at officers during a standoff.
According to a Coralville Police news release, officers were called to the 2400 block of Dempster Drive just before 10am Thursday for a potentially suicidal male. Once at the scene, investigators reported hearing a gunshot, but were subsequently able to make contact with the lone occupant of the home.
For the next hour and ten minutes, officers had intermittent contact with the person, trying to convince him to accept help, while he continued to threaten both himself and officers.
At one point, the male appeared at the front door willing to surrender, but then retreated back inside, subsequently emerging from the garage pointing a rifle at officers.
One officer fired two rounds, both of which struck the man in the upper torso. He was
immediately secured and medical aid provided. Johnson County Ambulance transported the
injured man to The University of Iowa Emergency Trauma Center. His condition is currently
unknown.
Neither the officer, nor person shot, are being identified at this time pending notification of
families and in consideration of the on-going investigation.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was requested to the scene and will
conduct the investigation.
