The University of Iowa Athletics Department announced Monday that they tested 70 people during the week ending August 2nd and found five positive tests for coronavirus.

Since testing began on May 29th, there have been a total of 32 positives out of 603 tested, a positivity rate of 5.3%.

A release from the department says that following a positive test result, protocol established by UI Athletics and medical staff is being followed to ensure the safety of everyone in the department. The mandatory protocol calls for those to test positive to isolate, and those who might have been exposed to the virus to quarantine.

Men’s Basketball coach Fran McCaffery confirmed during a news conference Sunday that three players have tested positive; voluntary workouts were paused for 14 days on July 28th when two players tested positive for COVID-19.

Head football coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed on July 16th that individuals in the program have tested positive, but at that point the symptoms have been relatively minor.

The Athletics Department has not provided a breakdown of what sport has had positive tests, or whether those positive are players, coaches, or staff.
