Hy-Vee food stores won’t mandate masks for customers, although it will provide them as an option for shoppers who don’t have them.

Company officials say they want to remain inclusive to those who can’t wear masks due to medical reasons. The decision bucks the trend of other major retailers who require masks for shoppers, as suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of those companies include Walmart, Costco, Target, Walgreens, CVS, and Aldi, among others.

While Hy-Vee may not be joining the ranks of the corporations following CDC guidelines, the company says it will begin distributing more than three million free masks to those entering its stores starting next week.

Starting Monday, Hy-Vee employees will be stationed at the entrances of all stores to hand out masks to customers who are not wearing one prior to shopping.

Hy-Vee employees have been wearing masks since nearly the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
