Iowa City Police warn of recent circulation of counterfeit money

The Iowa City Police Department is alerting area residents and retailers of a recent spike in the use of counterfeit U.S. currency in the city.

Police are asking retailers to test any large denominations they find suspicious. Counterfeit detector pens can be used, as well as UV counterfeit detector machines.

If a resident or retailers believe they have received a counterfeit bill, they’re asked to contact the police as soon as possible, note the time of the transaction, and get a good description/security video of the suspect.

The Joint Emergency Communications Center can also be contacted if residents wish to report counterfeit currency at 319-356-6800.

This matter currently remains under investigation by the ICPD.
