The Center for Worker Justice launched a fundraiser called From My Home to Yours in April to help people affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

KWWL TV reports that locals have been extremely generous, with over $128,000 collected so far.

The group has been asking people to donate all or a portion of federal stimulus checks to help families in need of rent, food or utility payment assistance.

The Center says they’ve helped nearly 150 families so far, and the station reports that many recipients of the aid are front-line workers at meatpacking plants, restaurants, or grocery stores.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is behind the project; last week, they pledged $40,000 to the program. Recipients must apply for larger assistance programs in order to get a part of the monies.

Donations are taken in person at their office on First Avenue in Iowa City or online at www.cwjiowa.salsalabs.org/FromMyHometoYours.
