An Iowa City man has been arrested on a warrant stemming from a June assault.

According to police, 23-year-old Brandon Gilliams of Westgate Street committed the alleged assault on June 30th around 12:10am at a residence in the 2400 block of Aster Avenue.

Gilliams is accused of putting his hand around a woman’s throat and pinning her against a bed. He then allegedly tried to take the woman’s phone. When she refused, Gilliams reportedly pushed her, causing her to fall to the ground.

Officers report scratches on the woman’s neck, with redness and swelling around her left eye.

A warrant was issued for Gilliams’ arrest the next day; he was apprehended and booked into the Johnson County Jail around 12:30pm Thursday. He’s been charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor. If convicted on the charge, Gilliams could be sentenced to up to a year in jail.
