Iowa City High School principal John Bacon has handed out free lawn signs in support of the student body.
Bacon tells KCRG TV that he used school funds to make the signs, which show the City High logo and the wording, “Black Lives Matter, We Stand Together. We are City High Little Hawks, the School that leads.”
Bacon says that he’s trying to show the students and the community that they don’t want to be silent and called the signs a way to show support.
Since offering them online Monday, the 250 signs were almost gone as of yesterday afternoon. Donations of about $1000 have since nearly offset the cost of printing.
The most recent data from the state Board of Education says that black students are about 18% of the school’s population.
