A Johnson County resident who decided to run for county supervisor after receiving expletive-laden emails from a current supervisor says he’s not alone.
Doug Richou has been involved in an email exchange with current supervisor Rod Sullivan for over a week. KCJJ reported the exchange on Saturday, and Richou told KCJJ Sunday that he’s since heard from numerous county residents who say they’ve received similar email replies from Sullivan.
KCJJ has been able to confirm Richou’s claims with three constituents, although they declined to be named or provide copies of the emails.
Richou sent Sullivan multiple, one-sentence emails asking such questions as, “Do you support keeping the county owned MRAP vehicle?”, “Are you planning on cutting the Law Enforcement budget for Johnson County?”, and “The Iowa Freedom Riders have issued a list of 13 demands. Which ones do you support?” Richou forwarded the email exchanges to KCJJ.
Sullivan told KCJJ he receives numerous emails from constituents, but felt the constant emails from Richou were insincere. He called Richou a “provocateur” and not “an honest broker.”
Sullivan’s exchanges following Richou’s questions bear that out. In response to the Freedom Rider question, Sullivan replied, “I agree with them that you are a dick.” The question about cutting the law enforcement budget was met with a reply of, “I am planning on asking them to create a ‘Dickhead of the Year’ award and present it to you. Annually. Not quite sure of the cost yet.”
Sullivan also calls Richou an “a-hole” and a “piece of s**t,” and questions if he has any “balls”.
Richou asked Sullivan why he would use such language in a publicly-owned email, as Sullivan replied from his official county account. KCJJ asked Sullivan about using expletives on a county email exchange. He noted there are no rules against it, and questioned whether “dickhead” is technically considered an expletive.
At one point during the email exchange, Richou declares he now plans to run against Sullivan for supervisor as a write-in candidate this fall. The election is set for November 3rd.
