A Saturday night police chase on Iowa City’s west side led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.

According to arrest records, Iowa City Police called 37-year-old Quenton Fitzgerald of Shady Glen Court Saturday night to ask whether he was in possession of a 2017 Ford Fusion. Fitzgerald told them it was in Chicago.

Police observed Fitzgerald driving the car in question near his residence a few minutes later, just after 9pm. An officer activated his lights and sirens, but instead of stopping, Fitzgerald allegedly squealed out of the parking lot and sped away. The officer lost sight of Fitzgerald, and witnesses told the officer they saw his car speeding at 50-60 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.

Police eventually located the car after Fitzgerald allegedly ditched it and threw away the keys in a nearby yard. Fitzgerald was located a short time later, telling police, “I was trying to get away from the police.” His blood alcohol content was measured at .165%.

Fitzgerald is charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Eluding While Committing OWI. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of six years in prison.
