A former director of the Iowa City Hillel House could spend up to a quarter-century in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing a nine-year-old boy.

29-year-old David Weltman was convicted of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse in March. He was sentenced to 25 years behind bars by Judge Chad Kepros on Friday. Online records show he must serve a minimum of 70% of the sentence before being eligible for parole.

The abuse happened when Weltman was giving the boy Hebrew lessons at Hillel House between February 1 and March 31 of 2019.

The victim told authorities that Weltman picked him up, carried him into another room and touched him inappropriately. One of Weltman’s acquaintances alleges that Weltman admitted that he touched a child and admitted that he’s attracted to young boys.
