The warden at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center has abruptly retired amid an investigation into the spread of COVID-19 at the Oakdale facility.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, James McKinney sent a one-sentence notice to state Department of Corrections Director Beth Skinner last month. The retirement was immediate, and came after state officials announced they were investigating complaints that McKinney had not been following proper COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

The IMCC is the only Iowa correctional facility with reported COVID-19 cases among its inmates.
