While many businesses are laying off or furloughing employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, a large Iowa City employer is actually adding to its staff.

Procter & Gamble has announced that it not only plans to maintain operations at its Lower Muscatine Road plant, it also plans to invest in more staff and production capabilities.

The announcement comes just two years after P&G announced it was cutting 500 jobs in Iowa City and moving production of shampoo, conditioner and body wash to a newer plant in West Virginia.

Iowa City Plant Manager Jason Jackson told KCRG TV-9 that since the West Virginia announcement, the company has conducted studies looking at the future of the Iowa City plant. Those studies showed the Iowa City plant was needed to meet what the company called the “emerging needs” of its North American business. Jackson says the study also cited “the strong performance of Iowa City’s workforce and the community’s culture of innovation”.

The change in plans will allow Procter and Gamble to add new jobs, although the company did not give any specifics.
