An Iowa City woman who allegedly went on a shopping spree with someone else’s credit cards without permission in 2017 and reportedly stole a car in 2018 has been taken into custody.
Police say 39-year-old Raquel Taylor of Taylor Drive admitted to being an accomplice in the November 11th, 2017 use of credit cards that were found in a stolen wallet. Taylor and her co-defendents reportedly visited at least 8 different stores that day throughout Johnson County, and admitted selecting some of the items that were paid for with the stolen cards. In total, over $2100 in fraudulent transactiosn were made.
In January of 2018, Taylor allegedly took possession of a 2015 Dodge Journey that didn’t belong to her and had not returned it by February 16th of that year, prompting a call to police. She’s also accused of withdrawing $200 from an ATM on the 16th, with video evidence of the transaction viewed by authorities.
Warrants were issued for her arrest, and she was booked into the Johnson County Jail Friday at 2:37pm. She’s charged with first degree theft for the vehicle, 2nd degree theft and unauthorized use of a credit card for her alleged part in the credit card transactions, and fifth degree theft for the reported ATM withdrawal. If convicted on all counts, Taylor could be sentenced to over twenty years in prison.
Taylor was released Saturday afternoon; an initial hearing date has not yet been set.
