One person was taken to the hospital after a blaze at Melrose Meadows Assisted Living early Saturday morning.
According to a news release from the Iowa City Fire Department, crews were called to the Dublin Drive facility just before 12:45am after being notified by the alarm company. A 9-1-1 call by Melrose Meadows staff quickly confirmed an active fire in one of the assisted living units.
Fire crews arrived on the scene and found a fire being controlled by an active sprinkler. Firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire and contain the damage to the one assisted living unit. The sole occupant of that unit had been removed to safety by facility staff prior to the fire department’s arrival. All other occupants in the close proximity to the fire unit were removed to safety by facility staff and fire crews.
The fire was brought under control approximately five minutes after firefighters’ arrival.
Coralville firefighters provided mutual aid.
One civilian was transported by ambulance from the scene. No other civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Total property damage is estimated to be $20,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the ICFD Fire Marshal.
