University of Iowa Health Care has announced additional steps to protect patients and staff in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Suresh Gunasekaran, CEO at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, said in a news release Monday, “It is critical we maintain the highest levels of safety for our patients and staff, and that means limiting the number of people in our facilities so we can follow social distancing.”
To that end, effective Wednesday, visits are temporarily suspended for adult patients, and pediatric patients are limited to only one parent or legal guardian per day. The restrictions apply to all UI Health Care patient care facilities, including the UIHC, Stead Family Children’s Hospital, offsite clinics, UI QuickCare and UI Urgent care locations.
Exceptions will be made for inpatients who are having a baby, in critical care, facing end-of-life care decisions, or in the ER.
All visitors and employees will continue to be screened for COVID-19 symptoms, as they have since the middle of March.
In the release, Gunasekaran apologizes for the inconvenience, but adds that the UIHC “will continue to go the extra mile in our COVID-19 preparations to keep Iowans safe.”
