An Iowa City man was taken into custody early Saturday after being accused of assaulting his live-in girlfriend.
According to arrest reports, officers were dispatched to the Mission Point Road address of 57-year-old Brian DeCoster, where a female arrived with bruises all over her body. During the subsequent conversation with the woman, the officer was told that she was assaulted by DeCoster, her live-in boyfriend over the last year, over the last several days, but couldn’t remember if she had been assaulted that evening.
The woman alleges that DeCoster put his hands around her neck along with assaulting her, but was unsure whether she lost consciousness. The officer noted the woman had a fat lip, a bruised and swollen cheek, and bruises to her right forearm, right shoulder, under her left arm, both knees, and both shins. She also had swollen toes and blood on her left foot.
DeCoster was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 12:12am Saturday. He’s charged with domestic abuse assault impeding airflow, and domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury. If convicted on both counts, he could face a prison sentence of up to four years.
