A Cedar Rapids woman has been charged with theft after attempting to steal nearly $900 worth of groceries from an Iowa City store.
According to police, 35-year-old Carrie OHare of Park Court Southeast was observed by staff leaving the 1st Avenue HyVee Sunday just before 6pm with a cart full of groceries. She allegedly left all points of sale without attempting to pay for the groceries, valued at $842.62.
OHare was asked to stop by staff, but she refused and then left the parking lot without the cart full of items.
When authorities contacted OHare, she allegedly said that she had no intentions of paying for the items, then added that she “thought about paying for the items.” When arrested, officers reportedly found two glass pipes recently used for methamphetamine in her purse.
Ohare was charged with 3rd Degree theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on the charges, she could be sentenced to over two years in prison.
A search of court records shows Ohare having been arrested on several charges dating back to 2002.
