An Iowa City woman who allegedly claimed she was sick and needed the items is accused of stealing cleaning supplies from an Iowa City supermarket.
According to authorities, 43-year-old Latoya Coleman of the Town and Campus Apartments was at the First Avenue Hy-Vee at 11:50am on March 23rd. Staff allegedly noticed Coleman selecting cleaning supplies and concealing them in her purse.
Staff confronted Coleman in the parking lot after she left without attempting to pay for the items. She reportedly gave up a bottle of disinfectant and then fled on foot. She was followed to a nearby apartment and police were called.
Coleman reportedly told police that she went to HyVee with the intention of stealing “disinfectant spray” because she was sick, and never had any intention of paying for the items. Officers noted in their arrest report that her purse was completely empty when they made contact with Coleman.
She was charged with 5th degree theft, a simple misdemeanor. A court date was set for June 30th .
