A police chase through two counties along Interstate 80 has led to an Illinois man’s arrest.

The Iowa State Patrol says a trooper attempted a stop on a Chrysler 300 near the Victor exit in Iowa County just after 10:30 Saturday night. The vehicle failed to pull over despite the trooper activating his lights and sirens, and allegedly sped up to as much as 120 miles per hour. The driver, later identified as 20-year-old Colin Gist of Lake Villa, Illinois, eventually pulled over at the Dubuque Street exit.

The trooper says the inside of the car smelled of marijuana. A probable cause search was conducted, allegedly turning up a plastic baggie of marijuana and a marijuana blunt in the back seat.

Gist was the only person in the vehicle. A drug recognition expert determined he was under the influence of cannabis and unable to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Gist was arrested and charged with Operating While Under the Influence, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Eluding While Impaired. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
